A question more people should be asking themselves.

Have you ever walked out of a Pilates class thinking, That felt more like a HIT class or Bootcamp? You wont be alone, Pilates has exploded in popularity, so have the variations, hybrids, and rebranded workouts that borrow the name but not necessarily the method.

Pilates isn’t just a collection of exercises; it’s built around distinct principles. Ask yourself if your teacher put focus in these areas.

  • Breathing

  • Control

  • Concentration

  • Centering

  • Precision

  • Flow

If the instructor is cueing reps and sets with no alignment focus, control, breathing you might not be in a a Pilates Method session and more a Pilates Fitness class.

A real Pilates class consistently brings your awareness back to how you’re moving, not just how hard you’re working.

A true Pilates class can be tough, but the after-effect is usually,

taller posture, calmer nervous system, more mobility and a sense of integrated strength.

You should been able to have a chat with your teacher before starting sessions to go over any injuries and goals and be put into a class thats most suitable for your needs. If the class is a one size fits all, its not Pilates. We adapt and modify movements for the individuals in front of us.

So… Is Your Pilates Class Really Pilates?

Ask yourself

  • Am I learning the principles and technique?

  • Is the instructor trained in the actual Pilates method?

  • Does the class follow purposeful sequencing?

  • Do I leave feeling balanced and connected, not exhausted?

  • Does it feel like mindful movement, challenging but controlled?

If you’re answering no to most of these, you might be taking a Pilates-inspired workout, which is totally fine as long as you know what you’re signing up for.
